Signs That Your Home Appliances Need Service

Before they fail completely, household appliances often signal beforehand that maintenance or repair is due. These warning signs should be taken seriously and professional maintenance should be carried out sooner rather than later. Otherwise, an initially minor defect can cause costly consequential damage. So what are typical warning signs?

The most obvious, of course, is when an appliance is only working to a limited extent. If the dishwasher no longer pumps, the washing machine does not get hot or the freezer defrosts, the first thing to do is to switch it off and not restart it. Maybe the problem can be solved by yourself. A look at the operating instructions can help. Many appliances issue error codes that can be used to localize defects. For example, consumers can remove and clean a clogged filter themselves. If a heating element or the electronics need to be replaced, the workshop can help.

If puddles form in or around washing machines, refrigerators, air conditioners or dishwashers, they should also be disconnected from the power supply quickly. It is probably not condensation, but a leak, a broken pipe or a damaged seal. To avoid mold or even rust, the defective part must be replaced.

Always suspicious are unusual noises that a household appliance has not made before. If there is a buzzing, humming, clanking or clanging noise, you should pay attention, even if the appliance is otherwise functioning normally. Maybe a coin just got lost in the washing machine and is making noise during the spin cycle. More likely, however, is that a component has come loose or an electronic component has gone bye-bye.

The Signs Are Often Obvious: Your Household Appliance Needs Maintenance

Consumers should also trust their nose: Foul odors from household appliances should not be. If the refrigerator, washing machine or dishwasher merely smell, a cleaning with vinegar water or household soda can make everything fresh again. However, if appliances smell like subway tracks or "dicey," experts have to get in on the act. That's when mechanical metal components rub against each other or electronic components burn out.

If the electricity, gas or water bill skyrockets unusually, this can also be a warning signal that a household appliance is in need of repair. In this situation, specialists should be called in quickly. Not only to save money, but because the appliance threatens to overload electrically or leak gas or water, respectively.

The good news, however, is that modern household appliances usually have built-in safety systems to prevent such dangerous damage. Washing machines have water stop hoses, gas stoves have shut-off valves, and in the event of a short circuit, the fuse pops out. At the latest when these systems trip, a repair is due.
