Best Practices for Installing Your Home Appliances
Surprise: The installation process for a new home appliance begins long before it is purchased. There are five reasons for this.
First, there must be enough space. The dimensions of large household appliances are standardized, but they vary. For example, there are stoves and washing machines with a width of 50 centimeters instead of the usual 60. In order not to have a gap or too little space, the space required must be known in advance. Refrigerators and stoves also need ventilation gaps on the back and upward to dissipate heat.
Then the installation location plays a role. Most kitchen appliances are available as freestanding units or as undercounter or built-in units. The latter lack the cover plate or the door front. It is essential to ensure that the anti-vibration mat still fits under washing machines. Top-loaders can be an alternative where space is at a premium. It is also practical that, for example, on refrigerators the door opening can be placed from one side to the other in case of collisions.
Thirdly, power sources must be available and connections for gas, water and exhaust air. For the power supply, it is necessary to pay attention to the correct voltage. Gas installations may only be carried out by qualified tradesmen. With the device, if necessary, order suitable lines and extensions. Some manufacturers also prescribe certain connections for the warranty, such as a supply hose with safety valve for washing machines.
It is often overlooked that a household appliance must somehow enter the home. So, fourthly, the delivery route must be wide enough. Where centimeters are at stake, a door can often be unhinged if necessary.
Fifthly, the best installation planning is not much fun if the right tools or manual skills are missing at the end. Anyone who is deficient in this area should leave the installation to a professional.

Often Neglected, but Just as Important: The Soft Influencing Factors
The decision in favor of a household appliance is also based on criteria that are not directly related to the installation. Does the function correspond to the desired scope? A single person is better off with a lean household fleet than a four-person student flat-sharing community. How is energy efficiency? A good balance makes up for higher initial costs with a lower electric bill. Does the dealer deliver to the installation site and take the old appliance right away?
An appliance raises questions of style: Do its dimensions, shape, color and front match its "colleagues" and the decor of the rest of the home?
And finally: Always allow for a time buffer. Installing household appliances is like heartbreak – it basically takes twice as long as expected.
